Tunisian Mermez

In Tunisia, people eat sauces prepared in several ways - the Mermez of Berber origin is one of them. This traditional hearty dish is eaten with some warm bread and is usually prepared during winter to instill that warm feeling. It's originally made from meat, onions, and chickpeas but can be easily veganized thanks to the availability of meat alternatives!

Preparation time: 45min (if precooked chickpeas are used)

Serves: 2 to 3

Ingredients

  • plant-based meat alternative (I used Quorn meatless filets)
  • 3 large white onions - cut into large cubes
  • 2 fresh medium tomatoes (or 1 large tomato)
  • 2 tablespoons of concentrated tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon harissa
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 cl olive oil
  • 200 g chickpeas - canned or washed and soaked the day before
  • 3 peppers
  • ground coriander
  • turmeric
  • salt and pepper

Method

  1. In a casserole dish, add olive oil, 2/3rd portion of cubed onions, filets, spices, concentrated tomato sauce, harissa and stir to mix all.

  2. Turn on the hob and let simmer for a while then add the chickpeas. Add boiling water until everything is covered, close the casserole dish and let cook.

  3. When the chickpeas become tender, add the tomato wedges and peppers cut lengthwise.

  4. Wait until the vegetables are cooked and turn off the hob.

  5. As a final step add the last onion cubes and cover the casserole.

  6. Serve hot with bread.
