I grabbed this at a Coles. Pretty pricey, especially given it is only 50 ml.
The story is that this was banned in Australia and then restricted apparently due to abuse by indigenous communities. Now since 2021 it is allowed as Australia tries to make friends and money from our Pacific Island neighbours. However it is not allowed to be sold mixed with say coconut, chocolate or pineapple which is unfortunate because it has a bitter taste.
The plant that it is made from has sedative, anesthetic and euphoriant properties. Five calories, 0.25g sugar and 137 mg of potassium in this shot. Calmer Co's press release says over 5 times the potassium of a banana but I don't think that's correct. Google tells me it a medium banana has around 358 mg. Maybe they mean by weight or something? Anyway the idea is that people might drink kava instead of alcohol.
And it has also caused some controversy. As a drink or powder is not the traditional method to buy or consume it. #glutenfree #kava 🇫🇯
