I’m delighted to share that our team has raised a US$10 million Series A! The new funds will enable us to innovate, expand and drive change better than ever before.
I started abillion in my kitchen with one young passionate engineer that I met at a coding bootcamp. The vision was clear: a billion people turning vegan. Our work was to figure out how to get there using technology and media in ways that no other company would, or would even want to.
If a billion vegans wasn’t ambitious enough, along the way we’ve added a few more challenges. We want to donate a billion dollars to charities whose work positively impacts our planet. And we want to drive billions of dollars away from irresponsible companies to entrepreneurs creating the next generation of businesses where sustainability is central to their values.
In the early days we bootstrapped as much as we could. But now we’re ready to accelerate our growth. In 2021 our team doubled in size and in 2022 we’re excited to hire more talented engineers and designers to make the product stronger and more engaging. Get in touch if you’re one of them! Looking back at the year, I have to admit, 2021 hasn’t been easy. Here in Singapore where we’re headquartered, the team is still mostly working from home. I love being hands on and working together. I would always bet on a team that works together over one that’s sitting at home. And it drives me crazy that most of the time I see our people on a screen. Despite the challenges, we’ve done some amazing things this year. Someone, somewhere in the world is creating content on abillion every 10 seconds.
At the end of November we crossed US $1 million dollars donated. Instead of doing what most start-ups do, which is spending a lot on marketing, we made a bet to create impact in the world. We’ve built impact into the user experience, allowing our members to choose where abillion gives. Through our donations our community has saved animals, protected habitats, put girls in school, fed hungry kids, and planted many trees around the world. This is the most rewarding part of the work.
When I started abillion we put our mission in our name. The mission for ourselves and our community from the first day has been to challenge conventional social media to create something better, built around compassion and respect for each other and to help animals, our communities and the planet. We’re not going to let anything stop us in our goal of turning a billion people on to our movement, and one day driving more than US$1 billion in donations to create impact around the world. Being able to donate US$1 million, directed and powered by the community, has been a huge milestone in driving change in the world of technology and the way companies do business. For 2022, we’re setting the bar even higher and pledging to fight harder and faster for what matters to all of us.
